Often when a person is suffering from an anxiety disorder, they will become withdrawn and detached from people they were once emotionally dependent or emotionally open with. They may also express feelings of emotional numbness, feeling like they are unable to feel elated or sad, instead void of emotional expression. This is one symptom that can be greatly improved with treatment.


Patients with anxiety often show symptoms of being overly sensitive, irritable and sometimes quick tempered. These emotional symptoms of anxiety are often associated with feelings of isolation and the belief that no one could understand what a person suffering from anxiety is experiencing. Additionally, it has been found by some scientific investigation that anxious people have higher stress hormone concentrations in their blood making it easier to trigger the fight or flight stress response.


A person diagnosed with an anxiety disorder can also be associated with feelings of fear. Particularly, people feel fearful that they will be in a situation that will cause them anxiety such as being asked to read aloud in class or having to give a big presentation in a board meeting. The fear that an anxiety disorder sufferer will experience will be directly associated to the cause of their anxiety, for example a person suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) may feel fearful about contracting a disease if they are unable to wash their hands.
