There are a number of ways a person can incorporate mindfulness into their day to day activities. Mindful walking, mindful eating and mindful washing, the list goes on. Fundamentally, mindfulness is the art of being present at all times, not worrying about the past or anticipating future events but being in a constant state of non-judgemental awareness of what is going on both internally and externally.
There are daily mindfulness exercises that can be done to increase mindful awareness. The body scan is a 20 minute relaxation and awareness process that encourages the practitioner to focus on each part of their body without trying to change or adjust; the aim is to simply become aware of how their body is feeling at that moment in time. The body scan has been found to promote deep relaxation and enhance sleep so is really effective to be practiced before going to bed in order to have an undisturbed and refreshing night’s sleep.
