According to a new report published by the British Psychological Society, depression and obesity are two of the main reasons why individuals may feel tired during the day.
Three pioneering studies are due to be reported at the 26th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Boston, have collectively found that un-managed emotional stress has been linked to emotional eating, weight gain, obesity and symptoms of depression.
The lead researcher of the studies was reported as saying that national campaigns to encourage weight loss, better means of dealing with depression and sleep disorders should be made a priority by governments in order that the growing incidence of diseases particularly heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are to be taken control of. Additionally, concern was raised over public safety hazards that could arise as a result of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).
Previously sleep disturbances have been found to be one of the root causes of diabetes, high blood pressure and stress. this latest research has now found that obesity and depression could be causing sleep disturbances highlighting new ways that the second tier of disorders could also be managed.
Mindfulness based therapies have been found to have a positive impact on reducing levels of anxiety, stress and depression. Particular techniques such as the ‘Bodyscan’ also have positive side effects of relaxation and improving insomnia. It is a non-toxic more cost effective means of treating a number of societal problems and health concerns while also having the positive aspect of giving individuals control over their own physical and mental health and wellbeing.
