How to deal with exam stress

The exam season is upon many families, adults and children across the UK. While small amounts of stress can act as a motivator, sustained stress has been shown to be detrimental to our mental, emotional and physical health.

Stress is normally defined as a reaction to a perceived stressor. Exam stress can impact in a variety of ways, including, making individuals feel overwhelmed at the amount of revising that needs to be done or concerns about not meeting grade expectations. Students at universities are particularly hard hit with debt-stress coupled with exam stress.

Parents of children and young adults living at home are also impacted by their children’s exam stress, with increased tensions, charged emotions and mental pressures. However, it is also an important time for parents to provide support during this brief yet potentially intense period.

Samaritans are reporting increased calls for help and support as a result of exam stress by students and parents alike. Many schools are unable to provide additional support to deal with student stress due to limited school budgets. has developed a free exam-stress-management audio tool to ensure all students and parents experiencing exam stress can be provided with an effective and simple solution to address exam stress.
