A drug called Propranolol, is a beta-blocker traditionally used to lower blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension however recent research has reported that its use may be key to calming the bodies and minds of those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In response to an emergency adrenaline and noradrenaline are released to activate adrenergic receptors which are nerve cell specifically a type called beta-adrenergic receptors. It is believed that activating these beta-adrenergic receptors enhances the brains ability to store memories of frightening events in an area known as the amygdala. It is believed that being prescribed beta blockers not only block this receptor site but all beta-receptor sites including those that increase blood pressure; therefore, it is predicted that the physical symptoms of PTSD including shaking, racing heart rate and hyperarousal may also benefit from beta-blocker treatment.
This latest proposal comes when psychologists who are working with the families of military personnel are arguing that post traumatic stress disorder is a natural response to trauma in particular close combat experiances which presents wholly unnatural circumstances. Based on this understanding should doctors be inhibiting this possible healing process or are there other less intrusive methods that could be used to alleviate the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder .
