Stress causes hair loss in Women

Stress affects our emotional, mental and physical health, recent studies has linked stress with hair loss, especially in women.

Dermatologists have found that prolonged or severe episodes of stress such as child birth, divorce, death or even work results in the thinning of hair. The impact of stress can be felt several months later. Hair normally follows three stages, growing, resting and falling. Majority of our hair is normally in the resting phase which can last about three months. Trauma or stress shocks the hair follicles into the resting phase, and it is normally about three months later, that hair fall-out is noticed.

Although it is normal to lose around 1% of our hair every day, about 100 or so hair, its important to notice any changes to the quantity of hair loss, which may be noticed on the pillow, during showers, combing or brushing our hair.

Unlike male baldness patterns, in which hair thins out on top of the scalp, stress induced hair loss will also thin hair on the sides and at the back of the head. Stress induced hair loss will normally grow back, however, it is far better to prevent or manage stress levels during the episodes of stress, rather than wait for three months, lose your hair, which in turn will create its own stress and then seek ways of managing stress .

Stress management is becoming the most important aspect of maintaining good health, especially during this recession which seems like its here to stay with job insecurity, reduced disposal able income and general worsening economic climate.

Stress can be effectively managed through meditation . Meditation is simply learning to become aware of the Present Moment of now, rather than “living” in fantasies of the future or replaying the past.
