During a stress response, non-essential bodily functions either slow down or stop in order that the energy is available required to fuel survival mechanisms of the fight or flight response.
As a result of the secretion of stress hormones particularly cortisol, erection or vaginal lubrication ceases. This isn’t necessarily a problem when a person is pressured and stressed at work. However, the effects of the stress hormones continue to react within the brain for approximately 6 hours after the initial event has occurred which could subsequently cause problems, sexual dysfunction and relationship stress.
The impact of stress hormones is is not the only problem. Stress often leads to individuals feeling irritable and angry. Additionally, the stressed person may also be suffering from insomnia which could be amplifying the situation causing relationship stress and so the perpetuating cycle continues.
