Upon being diagnosed with diabetes a person will often feel taken by surprise by the implications of such a diagnosis. They may feel bewildered over the impact diabetes may have on their health, day to day activities, relationships and essentially their life span.
Emotions including anger, self-criticism, shame, guilt, and fear are often experienced by the newly diagnosed and the long term sufferer alike. It has only been in the last few years that clinicians and researchers have accepted the extent of the mind and body interactions. It wasn’t long ago that it was strongly believed that the mind (thoughts and emotions) had no bearing on physical wellbeing which has now been found to be very much the case.
An integrated mindfulness-based course in emotion management can help an individual recognise how an unhealthy mindset and destructive emotions can have a negative impact on their physical health as well as mental and emotional wellbeing. In the foundation course an individual will learn to identify emotional triggers through self-awareness as well as self-control strategies to use during times of mindless emotion. The course will include:
- Mindfulness exercises, yoga, tai chi and qi gong that will systematically encourage and develop an individual’s inner ‘mind/body’ resources for emotion self-regulation and self-compassion.
- Evidence based practices will be taught to help an individual become aware of how emotions such as fear, anger, resentment, self-criticism and shame could be destructive while encouraging traits such as self-compassion, acceptance and contentment.
This integrated mindfulness based course is different to other mindfulness courses as:
- It addresses the psychological impact of Diabetes which has not been wholly considered in the majority of self-care and treatment plans. The emotional impact of a lifelong chronic physical illness will be explored highlighting the specific relationship between destructive emotions and diabetes management.
- The techniques and exercises introduced in an integrated mindfulness based course bring relevant evidence based therapeutic relief to a diabetic’s life, potentially reduce the chances of developing diabetes related illnesses and subsequently can enhance quality of life.
