Stress management can prevent psoriasis

Sunday 28th of October was World Psoriasis Day, to mark the occasion the Chennai Skin Foundation organised a conference to highlight the latest findings from scientific research examining the cause and treatment of psoriasis. The need for spreading awareness for the condition was also discussed with great importance.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, which is caused when the skin cells are seen by the immune system as a pathogen or an infectious agent. The body sends out an alert signal which speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. There are five main types of psoriasis that appear differently on the body.

Psoriasis is not contagious; but it has been linked to an increased chance of suffering a stroke. The attendees of Sunday’s conference spoke of the use of herbal remedies as a treatment for psoriasis but also the impact stress can have on the condition.

The impact of psychological stress on the nervous, endocrine and immune system has been extensively investigated.

Latest research has found that by integrating stress management techniques like mindfulness meditation and relaxation techniques such as yoga or tai chi could help to prevent or improve psoriasis.
