Stress causes asthma in children

Tue, 21 Jul 2009

Children of parent suffering from stress and anxiety are more likely to develop asthma, especially those living in areas with high levels of pollution .

Stress and anxiety has been shown to impact immune systems, combined with heavy metal and chemical pollutants would be a high risk to health, and particularly for children whose health and immune systems are still developing.

Asthma is now known to affects 20% or one in five children and 10% or one in ten adults in the UK alone. The past decade has seen an increase in respiratory problems as well as asthma, pointing to yet more evidence to suggest the effects of increasing stress on health.

In addition to stress being a cause towards asthma, stress is also known to trigger of asthma attacks. Combined with other factors such as smoking, pollution, poor diet and lack of exercise will inevitably have a negative effect on health.

Stress normally starts with a thought, a reaction to a perceived demand, and this thought gives rise to emotions, which in turn trigger yet more thoughts. The combined effect of stress and emotional output will change our physiology as well as our behaviour.

Meditation is an effective and safe method of dealing with mental, emotional and even physical stress.
