Nearly half of UK population say they are stressed

Private medical insurance firm Bupa has revealed that almost half of all people in the UK are currently going through a period of stress.

The study found that 44 per cent of the 10,000 respondents said that they were feeling this way.

In addition to this, 28 per cent of those who admitted to being stressed said that this has been the case for over a year.

The figure equates to around six million people nationally, while over a quarter of them said that they were feeling “close to breaking point”.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust medical director Dr Martin Baggaley said: “While low-level and irregular bouts of stress can be beneficial and manageable, it’s concerning to see that so many people are experiencing sustained and relentless stress.”

He added that stress is also known to cause long term problems like anxiety, depression and even heart disease if it is left unchecked for lengthy periods of time.

Money worries were the main source of stress for people, while day-to-day working and family life were also listed as contributing factors.
